Stronger Together: Gordon Foot’s Inspiring Trek for Safer Waves
In October 2023, Gordon Foot, set out to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, in support of Safer Waves, an organisation dedicated to helping seafarers impacted by bullying, harassment, and assault.
At Aventa, we were proud to stand behind this initiative in two concrete ways:
- Financial support to contribute directly to the fundraising effort
- Ongoing social media communication to amplify Gordon’s journey, raise awareness, and help grow donations
It was a powerful moment to see Gordon reach the summit wearing his Aventa vest, a visible reminder that meaningful challenges are rarely faced alone.
This was Aventa’s first sponsorship initiative, and supporting Gordon quickly felt like the obvious decision. It reflects who we are: a company committed to supporting ambitious individuals in our community who challenge themselves while contributing to something bigger than their own performance.
Gordon’s motivation echoed strongly with Aventa’s values. A lifelong seafarer with a decades-long career across submarines and offshore projects, and involved at the time with Aventa on the Celtic Interconnector, he chose Safer Waves because the cause addresses an unfortunate reality within our industry. Life at sea can involve unique power dynamics, isolation, and multicultural crews; that is exactly why a safer, more supportive maritime environment matters.
We also value the way this initiative was funded: through crowdfunding and collective contribution rather than traditional financing. That approach adds depth to the support, aligning with our belief in community-driven progress and sustainable growth.
Gordon shared his story, his training, his doubts, his determination, and the lessons from the climb,in an interview designed to inspire others: if he can climb Kilimanjaro, perhaps it can encourage someone else to face the “mountains” in their own life.
